What is Meant by "Educational Challenges?"
February, 2006
In the context of this website, "Educational Challenges" will mean something different to
each reader, especially depending upon their age.
For younger readers just leaving their secondary or college education, the vast changes
that have occurred in the business and technical world in the past 50 years will not be
readily apparent. Unless their parents have taken special care to tell them about their own
(the parents') educational process and experiences in technological advances. Computers,
cell phones, the Internet and personal computers are the norm for the younger set.
Their challenges will be to stay current with the "information overload" that will be
the norm for all future employers, employees and the self-employed.
For all the people already out of college and into the workforce, the challenge to stay
current will be just as intense and important. This challenge is not just about things
technical. The tools needed to survive in the business world are not just those
technological innovations we all know about. There are more, and they are overlooked,
because they are so mundane. I refer to all the basic skills in mathematics, reading
and comprehension, and any scientific subject which directly affects the nature of
the business in which anyone is employed.
Simply stated, if a person in the workforce cannot communicate, cannot comprehend the
ever-increasing pressure to understand numbers and their manipulation, and cannot
aborb the complexity of modern business and its underpinnings, he/she will always be
struggling to survive, and will have a lesser chance of succeeding to higher levels
in business.
This begins with basic schooling, but should never end. A person in the workforce,
whether self-employed, an employee or an employer, should realize that continued
education in their chosen field and all areas related, is mandatory. This education
does not have to be in formal classes. It can be largely self-taught. But it must
be done.
The articles on this website and those that are linked through reference will never
be the solution to continued education. This writer hopes that the simple mention of
various subjects will stimulate the reader to realize that there may be information
available to assist them. The reader must challenge him/herself to look for it and
absorb it.
